Incubator/CoG Workflow
From Globus
The Java CoG Kit (http://www.cogkit.org) Workflow project is an Incubator project that attempts to provide the following mechanisms of supporting scientific Workflows.
- First, we have Java API abstractions for specifying workflows based on direct acyclic graphs. As the Graph is based on a task model, anything can be a node in the graph including invocations to WSRF, Web Services, GT2 servers, SSH servers and so forth.
- Second, we have a very sophisticated workflow engine and language, that allows easily to specify workflows through some simple constricts. Important to note is that the language is extensible and based on XML while also providing a functional programming language.
- Third, we have a prototype Grid shell that enhances the normal set of UNIX like commands to include Grid features. This project is still in the alpha stages.
- Fourth, we will provide a subset of BPEL like workflow constructs that make the use of workflows simpler that the original BPEL specification.
The Java CoG kit contains additional workflow like concepts, that however have not yet been integrated in the activities as part of this project. More information about the CoG and Workflows in general can be found at http://www.cogkit.org
This GlobDev project webpage contains information for project committers and contributors. Information for users of CoG Workflow can be found at http://www.cogkit.org.

Status
The status of CoG Workflow is: Newly accepted Incubator Project 18 August 2006, as defined by the Incubator Process Guidelines found at http://dev.globus.org/wiki/Incubator/Incubator_Process .
Roadmap
The first item will be to define a roadmap. The link below does not yet work as bugzilla has not yet been configured to include the CoG Workflow item.

FAQ
- How does CoG Workflow relate to the Cog Kit?
- CoG Kit = CoG jglobus + CoG Workflow + other useful things
- Why is there not a single CoG Project
- CoG jglobus and CoG workflow provide some very different functionality. To allow more clearly to separate the development and access by different development teams two projects exist within the globdev universe. The other useful things are not part of globdev and will be distributed through our existing infrastructure.
- Is there more than CoG Workflow and jglobus?
- Yes. The CoG Kit contains other useful programs that are neither part of CoG jglobus or CoG Workflow. These parts are at this time NOT distributed through globdev. However, they can be found in our svn at http://www.cogkit.org.
- Where can I find more FAQs?
- There are now so many mailing lists, however I can not decide to which I should send my question. Which mailing list should I use?
- in order to be a globdev project new mailinglists must be created.
- previously all mail for the CoG Kit was submitted to java@globus.org. We intend to create an autoreply to this list that will give guidance to which mailing list you should forward your question. In general the following rule will apply once all mailing lists are set up:
- jglobus@globus.org
- ... list all package names of jglobus ...
- cog-workflow@globus.org
- Send question to issues related to the CoG workflow, CoG abstractions, and CoG GUIs to this list
- help@cogkit.org?
- This mailing list is not part of globdev. This mailing list is related to the other useful things that are in the CoG Kit but are not appropriate for the mailinglists jglobus or cog-workflow.
- jglobus@globus.org
